About

A celebration of a new Texas Historical Marker honoring The Flats early days Black community in Garland will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 3, 2026, in The Atrium. It will feature the performance of a key scene from "The Flats: Cradle of a Community" original musical drama, performed in April 2024 about The Flats, a free-standing Black community that featured its own stores, homes, a school, and a church and was situated in downtown Garland where the Granville Arts Center and the city government complex now stand. It is sponsored by Friends of Garland's Historic Magic 11th Street and is funded in part by a grant from the Garland Cultural Arts Commission.
