About

Following close on the heels of BULL DURHAM, star Kevin Costner hit a home run with 1989’s FIELD OF DREAMS, an entirely different kind of baseball movie that immediately put "If you build it, they will come" into the catalog of American catchphrases. Based on W.P. Kinsella's novel "Shoeless Joe," FIELD OF DREAMS is a singular mix of fantasy, comedy, baseball history, and sentimentality – a movie rather out of step with the cinema of the era. But audiences immediately latched onto the story of Ray (Costner), an Iowa farmer who is spooked by ethereal voices in his cornfield and decides to build a baseball diamond in his backyard. Neighbors and family members think he's lost his mind, until – well, we won't spoil the surprises here. Costner is superbly supported by screen legends like Burt Lancaster and James Earl Jones, as well as the endearingly feisty Amy Madigan, Ray Liotta, Timothy Busfield, and Frank Whaley (who was in just about everything in the late '80s). Like a sorcerer, director and screenwriter Phil Alden Robinson combined the various elements of the tale into an absolutely captivating experience. Fair warning: Even the toughest tough guys have been known to completely lose it midway through this one, so prepare accordingly.
