About
“A remarkable portrait of pop-culture obsession – how it can unite us, change us, and ripple down through our entire lives in ways both uplifting and unsettling.” – Matthew Jackson, AV Club Have you ever lost yourself so deeply into a TV show that it became a core part of your identity? Then you’ll find some kindred souls in the two disaffected suburban kids at the center of Jane Schoenbrun’s brilliant I SAW THE TV GLOW from A24. Our story follows two lonely outsiders, Owen (Justice Smith) and Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine), as they find connection through their mutual love of an obscure late-night TV show, The Pink Opaque . As the static of the TV screen begins to warp their perception of reality, they start to realize that their obsession might not be the innocent escape they thought it was. I SAW THE TV GLOW is pure, weapons-grade nostalgia for anyone who grew up staring into a fuzzy CRT TV way past their bedtime. The genius of it though is that it doesn’t pander, rather using our nostalgia to make us rethink our connection to the lost obsessions of our youth and how they define who we are today. It’s a remarkable follow-up to WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR from writer/director Jane Schoenbrun that will make you want to pop it back in the VHS player for another rewatch. It’s also got one of the most killer soundtracks in years, utilizing original tracks from artists like yeule, Sloppy Jane, and King Woman in clever ways that complement and elevate the scenes they’re in beautifully.
