About

Presented in French with English subtitles Pénélope can’t sleep. Startled awake by the screams of her new baby, she decides to take a late-night walk to calm him. She unwittingly walks into a crime scene, and witnessing the violence loosens the last screw in her unraveling mental health. As her insomnia intensifies, she’s plagued by visions, and without understanding or assistance from her boyfriend, her behavior becomes more and more erratic. Adding to her anxiety is the unresolved trauma from her sister’s death, and Pénélope's past begins to blend with her future into a confused, nightmare-like existence. As she seeks comfort in increasingly self-destructive ways, she goes further and further off the deep end, taking the audience along for the terrifying ride. A visually striking first feature from writer/director Chloé Cinq-Mars, the film is exquisitely crafted with great care put into every aspect, from the cinematography to the striking sound design. Pénélope’s rage and existential unraveling are fully believable thanks to a phenomenal performance by Rose-Marie Perreault as a woman battling postpartum demons. A tense psychological thriller that doesn’t skimp on extremely unsettling imagery, NESTING is an impactful, resonant film destined to stick with you long after viewing. (Lisa Dreyer)
