The Cards We're Dealt: Generative Writing Workshop

The Cards We’re Dealt: A Generative Writing Workshop is inspired by the tradition of Lotería, where the dealer recites a poem or riddle based on the card they draw. In this workshop, participants will write poems or stories using the cards they’re dealt, drawing on the images and meanings of each card to spark new, experimental language. Each Lotería card carries its own distinct imagery and symbolism, and participants will be encouraged to create their own stories, poems, or riddles in response. The workshop will also explore how the deck can be used to generate unexpected word combinations and lines, opening up new ways of creating meaning and approaching the writing process. The session will be taught by Angelina Leaños, a queer Latina writer, Ventura County Youth Poet Laureate Emerita, and MFA candidate at Fresno State. She is a Poetry Out Loud coach and poet-teacher who mentors youth in poetry recitation and creative writing, and her work has been published in Urban Word, Arkana, Poetry Daily, and Reed Magazine, among others.
